Plans for Laakavuori community building under way

Planning has begun for the new Laakavuori community building in Mellunmäki. The new building will replace the existing Laakavuori community building (Jänkäpolku 1).

The building will house the existing Laakavuori primary school, which will be converted into a comprehensive school, the Laakavuori daycare centre and the youth centre. In addition to this, the Helsinki Finnish Adult Education Centre have premises in the building to organise Finnish language courses for stay-at-home parents.

The new building will have multiple levels unlike the current single-storey building. This will allow for leaving more yard space for the daycare centre and comprehensive school.

The number of residents in Mellunmäki will increase in the future, and the current community building facilities will no longer be sufficient for the growing demand for services in the area. The new building will accommodate around 860 children, 480 more places than at present. The integrated comprehensive school will include grades 1–9. In addition to this, the operations of Daycare Varhela, which was closed in autumn 2025, will be merged with the new Daycare Laakavuori. Both the school and daycare centre will also have special educational needs classes and groups.

The youth centre is currently located at Tuukkalankuja 4 in Vesala. The Vesala premises will be vacated when the youth centre opens its doors in the community building.

Approval and funding for the project will be sought from the Helsinki City Board and City Council in winter 2027.

Demolition to start in January 2027

The construction of the future Vantaa Light Rail will reach the site of the community building in January 2027, meaning that the community building demolition will start at that time. According to current schedules, the construction of the new facilities can start in spring 2028 at the earliest. Construction will take about two years.

Operations to be moved to temporary premises during construction

The Laakavuori comprehensive school and Daycare Laakavuori will be moved to temporary premises during the Christmas holidays in 2026. The temporary premises are located at Aarrekuja 4.

Activities for children with multiple disabilities, which previously operated at Daycare Laakavuori, were moved to Ison-Antintie 22 on 1 August 2025. Local, permanent premises that better meet the requirements of the activity are being sought. Groups of children with multiple disabilities will operate in temporary facilities until we find new premises and they are ready to be taken into use.
