A new building is proposed for Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages. The new school, to be built in Myllypuro, would have capacity for 900 students, and it would replace the current Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages located in Itäkeskus. The project would be implemented with the life cycle model.

The new building of Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages would be located at Kiviparintie 1 in Myllypuro. According to plan, the school would start operating in the new building in August 2023. The proposed site is well served by public transport, and it is also close to the Myllypuro campus of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and sections of Helsinki Vocational College and Adult Institute.

Today Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages operates in Itäkeskus. The school needs a new building, as the current building is in poor condition and too small for the growing student body. The new facilities would be designed for 900 students, which would increase the school’s capacity by 300 students.

In addition to a general study programme, Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages has a programme emphasizing languages and internationality. Starting in August 2020, the school will also have an English and Finnish study programme. The school building also serves as one of the locations of Helsinki Upper Secondary School for Adults, which uses the building for evening classes.

According to the life cycle model, the contractor also maintains the building

The new Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages would be built using the life cycle model. According to this model, the contractor is responsible for design, construction and building maintenance for the first 20 years. The life cycle model has been applied in Helsinki once before, in the contract for the new Vuosaari Upper Secondary School.

The City of Helsinki is currently negotiating a life cycle project with possible contractors. Final bids will be handed over to the City in late 2020, and the goal is to commence construction in 2021. During the construction phase, Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages would continue to operate in the current facilities, and no new temporary facilities would be needed.

The City of Helsinki Urban Environment Committee’s Buildings and Public Works Sub-committee approved the proposed project plan for the life cycle project of Helsinki Upper Secondary School of Languages at its meeting of 2 April 2020. The proposal proceeds next to the City Board.
