Helsinki to begin work to prepare for flooding in Konala's Sänkipuisto Park

Helsinki will divert a branch of the Mätäjoki River in Sänkipuisto due to flood risk and build a new stormwater drain in Hilapelto under Vanha Hämeenkyläntie.

The work begins in March och and will be completed during 2026

The work will begin with the felling of trees in Sänkipuisto before the bird nesting season. The work will be completed during 2026.

Most of the park's trees and forest floor will remain as they are. More trees will be added to the park and the flying squirrel route will be improved.

The new channel will be integrated into the landscape as naturally as possible, with minimal impact on the existing trees. The new stormwater drain will be built with a gentler slope than the current one to make it easier for trout to swim upstream.

The relocation of the watercourse in Sänkipuisto will involve excavation work, causing occasional noise.

The construction of the new stormwater drain will require changes to traffic arrangements on Vanha Hämeenkyläntie. The road connection will remain open throughout the project. In the park, work areas will be fenced off.

The tree felling will be carried out by Helsinki City Construction Services, Stara.
