The City of Helsinki celebrates its population exceeding 700,000 people. Based on the latest population data and urban research and statistics estimates, Helsinki celebrates its population exceeding 700,000 people on 14 August, 2026. As part of the celebrations, the City of Helsinki wishes to give a gift of EUR 700 to the first new Helsinki resident born in the Naistenklinikka maternity ward. The child was born into the Lehtola family on 14 August at 00.03.
The child weighed 4084 grams and was 54,5 centimetres long at birth. The baby is family’s first child.
Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazonov paid a visit to the Naistenklinikka maternity ward on 14 August to congratulate the family.
− I would like to warmly congratulate the newly born 700,000th resident of Helsinki and the entire family at this important, happy and unique moment. I wish for every new resident born in Helsinki to be able to have a joyful and safe childhood and to be able to follow their dreams in the city of their birth and the city that is their home. Helsinki as a city is committed to making this possible, says Sazonov.
