The aim of this partnership is to ensure that Helsinki Shipyard will have access to a skilled and qualified workforce in the coming years. The training will put special focus on the need for shipbuilding competence arising from the shipyard's future icebreaker orders.

The agreement allows for the joint procurement of labour market training. This means that Helsinki Employment Services and Helsinki Shipyard will jointly contribute to the financing of the training. The cooperation agreement will remain valid until the end of 2029.

“This agreement is a start for concrete cooperation. It will enable us to support the growth of Helsinki Shipyard and, at the same time, open up new employment opportunities for jobseekers in Helsinki,” says Mikko Kurppa, team manager of Employer Services at Helsinki Employment Services.

Helsinki Shipyard is also pleased with the progress of the partnership.

“Our cooperation with the City of Helsinki Employment Services has got off to an excellent start. It's great that we can now deepen our partnership also to recruitment training, ensuring the availability of skilled labour for the shipyard,” says Antti Leino, Director of Public Affairs for Helsinki Shipyard and Davie's Finnish operations.

The training modules will be implemented in cooperation with Helsinki Vocational College. Training modules have been planned for subjects such as welding, sheet metal working, pipe fitting and electrical installation.

More detailed content and timetables of the training will be agreed on later in the year, based on the needs of Helsinki Shipyard. The aim is to launch the first training modules at the end of the year.

Active Communication About Trainings

Helsinki Employment Services are responsible for targeting the training and informing their jobseeker clients about the possibility. The target group of the training courses are unemployed jobseekers and jobseekers at risk of unemployment who have the capabilities and interest to work in a shipyard.

“Jobseekers interested in shipyard work should actively follow the Job Market Finland website, where the available training opportunities will be published. We will also target direct communications about the training modules at the jobseekers,” says Kurppa.

Over the course of the year, Helsinki Employment Services and Helsinki Shipyard have also worked together in terms of employment services and recruitment. This new cooperation agreement extends this partnership further to education and training.

“Cooperation with Helsinki Shipyard will strengthen the City's role in promoting a skilled workforce and supporting employers. In line with the City Strategy, Helsinki wants to be involved in strengthening the vitality and employment in the region in cooperation with local employers and businesses,” Kurppa summarises.
