Now that summer and the barbecue season are at their height, you need to take particular care when barbecuing in parks. Keep a few key things in mind to make barbecuing both enjoyable and safe.

The public parks in Helsinki are intended for the enjoyment of all residents, and you are allowed to barbecue in them. Some parks also feature barbecue spots built by the City. The City’s barbecue spots are pleasant places and destinations for spending time, but you should remember to respect local residents’ right to peace and quiet at night, particularly near residential areas. Proper use of these spots is important to ensure that they remain tidy and safe for everyone.

Place the barbecue grill on a non-combustible surface

In parks, you are only allowed to barbecue using barbecue grills that are not classified as open fire. One example of such a barbecue grill is a charcoal grill with legs, also known as a kettle grill. You must always place grills on a hard, non-combustible surface, such as sand. You are not allowed to barbecue on grass, as the heat will damage the grass. Disposable barbecue grills, which are popular with many people, are classified as open fires and you are not allowed to use them in parks.

Bring your own kindling to communal barbecue spots

The barbecue spots built by the City are intended for everyone to use. Please bring your own barbecue charcoal or firewood and kindling with you. Do not gather any material, such as twigs or branches, for burning from the park’s vegetation or decaying trees. Also make sure not to burn wooden boards or any other construction waste you find lying around. You are allowed to use disposable barbecue grills at designated barbecue spots.

Barbecuing is not allowed while a wildfire warning is in place

Before you start barbecuing, it is a good idea to visit the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s website to check for any current wildfire warnings. Use of the barbecue spots is not allowed while a warning is in place, as open fires are not permitted at all during such times. Some of the barbecue spots feature a cover that is closed for the duration of wildfire warnings. Even if a barbecue spot does not have a cover, you are not allowed to use it while a wildfire warning is in place.

Put out the fire and leave the place tidy for the next person

After barbecuing, it is important to make sure that the fire has gone out completely. There are red waste bins next to the barbecue spots where you can dispose of cooled-down barbecue charcoals. If necessary, pour water onto the embers and make sure that there are no smouldering spots left. Parks will remain more pleasant if you remember to take your rubbish home with you after a barbecue.
