The conversion of an island into a residential area continues in Nihti. The fourth phase of the project covers the preconstruction of the southern area for the construction of the actual residential buildings. The project includes the construction of streets, municipal infrastructure and shoreline structures, the dredging of coastal areas, rockfill and the demolition of old quay structures.

The work started in July with the fencing of the area and the construction of the work site base.  The installation of the silt and bubble curtain will start in the week starting on 4 August, followed by dredging the following week. The area will also be cleared of vegetation and old asphalt will be removed.

Construction includes noisy work phases

The contractor is authorised by the environmental authority to carry out work in the Nihti area on weekdays from 7:00 to 22:00 and at weekends from 8:00 to 17:00. The preliminary timetable of the work phases is as follows:
•    Processing of blasted rock Aug 2025– Jun 2028
•    Deep stabilisation Mar 2026–Sep 2026
•    Sheet pile driving Mar 2027–Oct 2027
•    Demolition of harbour structures Aug 2025–Oct 2025 and Jun 2026–Aug 2026

The noisiest work will be carried out on weekdays between 7:00 and 18:00

Transport of soil will increase heavy traffic in the area

Contaminated soil has been found in the area and is being transported away in covered loads to protect the environment.

The project requires transporting aggregates and materials, among other things, to the construction site. In addition to this, soil and other waste materials will be transported away from the site throughout the project. This will increase heavy traffic in the area.

For the time being, site traffic will not cause any changes to traffic arrangements.

The contractor responsible for the preconstruction of the area is Skanska Infra Oy.
