For 56 years now, the City of Helsinki has recognised the first baby born on 12 June as part of its annual birthday celebration. This year’s honouree – the Rauhala family’s new baby girl – entered the world in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
The City of Helsinki’s 2021 Helsinki Day baby is a baby girl born at 12.26 AM on 12 June.
Helsinki Mayor Jan Vapaavuori congratulated the new Helsinki Day baby and his family outdoors, in front of the Nastenklinikka hospital this year as a coronavirus-era safety precaution.
In honour of her new title, the 2021 Helsinki Day baby received a domestic romper suit from Aarrelabel, hooded baby towel and small wool socks as a gift from the city. The baby’s family also received flowers and a letter of congratulation that promises delivery of 300€ gift voucher once the baby has been registered in the population register or baptized.
The very first Helsinki Day baby was recognised in 1965, meaning that 2021 marks the tradition’s 56th consecutive year.
