The podcast series offers understanding and breaks down prejudices
The idea for the Nepsypuhetta (in Finnish and in Swedish) podcast series was born when thetteam of the neuropsychiatric coaching of social counselling for families with children was considering ways to break down myths and negative preconceptions about neurodiversity.
Neuropsychiatric challenges are caused by structural and functional abnormalities in brain function. Neuropsychiatric disorders are caused by the way the brain processes and reacts to information from the environment. This affects behaviour and the way the person interacts with their environment and other people.
The Nepsypuhetta podcast series has released a total of seven episodes, of which five are in Finnish and two in Swedish (Nepsysnack).
“We wanted to create a podcast specifically for our client base and their families. We know that our client families may contemplate issues related to neurodiversity a lot in their everyday lives and feel alone with these issues. Through the podcast episodes, we hope to give these individuals and their families answers to their questions as well as leave them with a sense that they are not alone with their struggles. This is why we also wanted to include an expert by experience in the discussion,” say social instructors Tuukka Terho and Maija Sarvela.
Without adequate information and support, everyday life can feel lonely and exhausting. The podcasts also provide concrete advice and tips that are easy to put into practice. Additionally, the podcasts help draw attention to ways to identify each child’s strengths and see their successes.
The series also includes episodes in Swedish
Mild neuropsychiatric difficulties are individual characteristics that usually do not cause significant hindrance. In the Swedish-language Nepsysnack episodes, Ira Eerikäinen and Marecia Johansson from the neuropsychiatric coaching of social counselling for families with children discuss, among other things, when support from a professional can be useful.
“Families seek help in a variety of situations where the parents need tools to support their child in a positive way. This may be because of deficiencies in the child’s executive functioning – the child may need repeated reminders, or support for starting and stopping things or for regulating their emotions, for example. Families may also need advice on how to deal with neuropsychiatric challenges in relationships with siblings or friends.”
