Planning the future of Annantalo through play
Annantalo’s Let’s Play! imaginary expeditions into the future (7–31 January 2026) will be used to gather the views of children, young people and families on what Annantalo could be like in the future, after the renovation. The events include a future expedition for young explorers intended for 3–6-year-olds and a playful Brainstorming Point guided by a future detective. For more information about the events, please visit the website: annantalo.fi.
The Annantalo renovation is scheduled to start in 2032 and will, among other things, improve the accessibility of the building. The aim is to make it easier for people with prams and wheelchair users to get around the building. In addition, the facilities and their technology will be upgraded. The renovation will also give an opportunity to develop the offered services and activities. Annantalo invites city residents, especially children, families and Annantalo partners, to join in brainstorming and planning the Annantalo of the future.
- Our goal is that by the mid-2030s, Annantalo will be a source of pride for the city's young residents, and a more functional and accessible art centre for children and young people, says Pirjetta Mulari, Chief of Children's Culture at Annantalo.
Renovating Annantalo with respect for the old
The renovation of Annantalo will preserve its cultural and historical features while creating functional spaces for its users, arts and culture activities and Annantalo staff. Annantalo started as an art centre for children and young people in January 1987. The building was originally built as a Swedish-language folk school, Annegatans svenska folkskolan, which was opened in 1886. During its history, Annantalo has also been used by the military and for various temporary purposes for a long period of time. After the renovation, the new and improved Annantalo is scheduled to open in 2034.
Let’s Play! online survey to open in January
You can also participate in the planning of Annantalo's future by filling in an online survey. The survey is open 7 January–31 January 2026 and can be found on the Annantalo website when it becomes available. Ten Annantalo memory games will be drawn among the survey respondents. The memory game was designed by graphic artist and designer Kasper Strömman.
