Herp trail

A nature trail with information about reptiles and amphibians, the herptile trail, is located in Särkkäniemi in Uutela.

Nearly all of Finland's reptile and amphibian species can be found along the 1.4-kilometre herptile trail.

The herptile trail starts near the Uutela kota (hut with a fire pit), and there are 11 herptile information boards along it. The nature trail route is marked with green pinecone signs. The herptile trail has been implemented in cooperation with Helsingin luonnonsuojeluyhdistys (Helsinki nature conservation association).

The outdoor trail

  • There are no parking spaces marked as accessible in the parking area. The information board about the nature trail is less than 50 m away. The surface of the parking area is stone ash.
  • 150 meters from the parking area there is an accessible dry toilet (outhouse).
  • The pick-up and drop-off area is located over 20 m from the information board.
  • The nature trail is partly one-way, partly circular. The length of the route is about 1,5 km.
  • Some of the nature information boards on the herptile trail can be reached without using the duckboards.
  • There are 10 information boards along the nature trail.
  • There are signposts at all crossroads of the route. The route is marked with a logo or sign affixed to the trees.
  • The nature trail is hard all the way but partly uneven (bumps). The surface of the passageway is in part fine crushed rock, gravel, stones and roots, duckboards (planks lengthwise).
  • The route contains narrow places where wheelchairs or strollers cannot fit through.
  • Next to the passage, there is at least one level difference causing a fall hazard, which is not bound by railings.
  • Along the nature trail, there are rubbish bins and and a rest stop with benches and tables for taking a break. The benches are sized for adults.
  • There is an accessible dry toilet (outhouse) along the nature trail at a distance of less than 20 meters from the main route.
