Safely in summer

Safety training open for all organised by the Rescue Department may be quietening down for the summer but we are still working hard on strengthening the safety competence of the people of Helsinki.

Summer employees at the Rescue Department receive safety training at the beginning of employment which lasts a whole day. The training helps them master important first-aid and first-aid extinguishing skills. We will also train other city summer employees on request. At the time of writing, some trainers are on the Bengtsår island training summer camp employees.

In the summer, you can spot our safety trainers in places like the Children’s Traffic Town, Fallkulla Domestic Animal Farm or playgrounds. Helsinki’s contract fire brigades are also part of numerous big and small city district and other events in the summer.

The largest public events of the spring season, Child Fair in April, Safety Days at Helsinki Railway Square and the fire brigades’ Finnish Championships a.k.a. Jehumalja at Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre Messukeskus in May as well as Helsinki Day with events in different parts of the city in June, are out the way before midsummer. Thank you to all participants!

Although the sun is warm and the beach and ice cream kiosk are calling, we have already thought about the coming autumn. You can already find safety training for the autumn in our training calendar which everyone can attend. City of Helsinki employees can enrol internally and others can find more information here(Link leads to external service)

We also organise tailored training for larger groups such as work communities. For enquiries, use the training request form(Link leads to external service)

Our new website will be available in June. In future, you can find us at pelastustoimi.fi/helsinki(Link leads to external service)

We have also put together a variety of material related to safety communications on the website. Take a look!

Here are some tips for a relaxed and safe summer

  • Know where you are. It is a good idea to write down the address and/or coordinates of the summer place. A call made through the 112 Suomi app will locate you automatically in an emergency.

  • Stay afloat. Wear a life jacket on a boat. Never go swimming alone and watch children closely.

  • Careful with fire. Do not light an open fire when a forest fire warning is in place. At other times, make sure the fire goes out.
  • A working smoke detector is a cheap life insurance!

Have a nice summer!
