Renovation of Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall will begin – the Swimming Hall is closed

The City of Helsinki will commission an extensive renovation of Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall, which will last approximately two years. The Swimming Hall is closed, and construction will begin with small demolition works inside the swimming hall at the beginning of February.

The procurement of the main contractor is underway. The aim is to start actual renovation in April-May 2024.

”The site will best show to the city residents later when a scaffolding will be erected for facade repairs on the side of Yrjönkatu. We also prepare to place site sheds along Yrjönkatu”, says Project director Katri Olli from the City of Helsinki.

The aim is to minimise the impact of transport to the use of the adjacent Yrjönkäytävä. However, it may occasionally be closed for short periods for safety reasons. The construction site may also temporarily impede traffic on Yrjönkatu. The block is densely built, so some ground-borne noise is expected to be transmitted to the neighbouring properties from the renovation.

The Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall will be closed for about two years for the renovations.

The last major renovation took place about 25 years ago. Yrjönkatu Swimming Hall was designed by architect Väinö Vähäkallio and inaugurated on 4 June 1928.

Where to go when the Swimming Hall is closed?

There are many of places to swim, exercise or visit a sauna in Helsinki. The nearest public indoor swimming pools are in Helsingin urheilutalo at Helsinginkatu 25 and Töölön urheilutalo at Topeliuksenkatu 41.

The journey from Yrjönkatu to Kallio takes about 20–25 minutes with trams 1, 3 and 9 and to Töölö a few minutes longer with trams 4 and 10 and buses 42, 63, 400 and 37. Itäkeskus indoor swimming pool can be reached by the metro from the city centre in less than half an hour. The address is Olavinlinnantie 6.

In the summer, services are provided by the Swimming Stadium and Kumpula outdoor swimming pool. Year-round marine spas are available at Katajanokka and Hernesaari, for example, and swimming clubs have activities on several beaches.
