The renovation work on Mäkelänkatu will begin in the first week of November with the site preparation. In the following weeks (10–23 November), temporary traffic arrangements will be implemented for the duration of the work. Motor vehicles will have one lane in each direction. Occasional traffic congestion is likely.
The contractor for the renovation is GRK Suomi Oy.
Mäkelänkatu will remain open throughout the project
Mäkelänkatu will remain open to motor vehicles, public transport, pedestrians and cyclists throughout the entire project. Access to building courtyards, maintenance and emergency vehicle access, and delivery traffic will also be safeguarded.
The construction site will affect the public transport timetables of Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) from early November onwards. In addition to this, tram services on Mäkelänkatu will be suspended during the replacement of the rails in summer 2026. The suspension will last for about three months. More detailed information about changes to public transport services will be available in the Journey Planner on the HSL website and in the HSL app.
The work will inevitably generate noise, dust and vibration. There may also be temporary water outages during the work, of which the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) will provide advance notice. A separate notice will be given for work that generates particularly loud noise.
The end result: a renewed Mäkelänkatu
The renovation will include the replacement of water and sewer pipes, district heating pipes, electrical cables, traffic lights, street lighting and some sections of tram rails, among other things.
At the same time, traffic arrangements will be reformed to improve safety and the flow of traffic on the street. Bicycle lanes will be built on the street. The number of motor vehicle lanes will be reduced from three to two. Junction arrangements will be redesigned and more traffic lights will be added to pedestrian crossings. The Rautalammintie tram stops will be removed.
Additionally, sections of the lime tree avenue that are in poor condition will be overhauled between Sturenkatu and Nokiankuja, as well as around tram stops.
