Non-invasive prenatal testing continues at maternity and child health clinics in Helsinki

We will continue to offer non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for expecting mothers at our maternity and child health clinics in 2026 as well. The testing is voluntary and free of charge.

NIPT is a more accurate way of identifying the most common chromosomal abnormalities in the foetus than standard combined screening. The test is performed on a sample of the mother's blood taken after the first prenatal screening ultrasound and can be done up to the 20th week of pregnancy.

“We are delighted to be able to offer NIPT screening to pregnant women at our clinics. For those whom NITP is not suitable, the clinics still offer the option of the usual combined screening,” says Manager of Maternity and Child Health Clinic Monica Lindberg.

We offer NIPT screening to all expecting mothers living in Helsinki and using the services of the City of Helsinki’s maternity and child health clinics for whom it is suitable and who want it as well as to expecting mothers who have chosen a City of Helsinki maternity and child health clinic and whose first clinic visit takes or took place this year.

We inform our customers about the possibility for free and voluntary NIPT screening.

The NIPT screening of customers of Helsinki’s maternity and child health clinics has been agreed to continue until the end of 2026, with an evaluation at the end of the year. The NIPT screening is carried out by HUS.
