Snow from yards must be piled on the property or carried away. The clearing of entryways to the property after the streets have been ploughed is also the responsibility of the property in accordance with the Maintenance Act, and snow must be stored on the property's own plot.
In some places, properties have piled up their snow in City areas in tall piles that obstruct movement and traffic observation. This is strictly forbidden.
“Visual obstructions cause traffic hazards, increase the City's workload and delay ploughing,” says Team Leader Toni Rantanen from the Street Maintenance Unit.
Inner city housing companies also responsible for pedestrian lanes
In the Helsinki city centre, properties are also responsible for ploughing and sanding the pavements adjacent to the property and removing the ploughed snow. Similarly, in central Helsinki, properties must also remove banks of snow accumulating next to the pavement after the roadways have been ploughed and transport the snow to the City’s snow dump locations.
The City ploughs the streets in the order of the maintenance classification. Residential streets are ploughed after main streets and public transport streets.
