This year, the tree was planted by the Apila daycare group from daycare Ebeneser in Kallio, together with Chair of the Helsinki City Council Eveliina Heinäluoma. The new pine tree is located near the recently renovated playground in Katri Vala’s Park. The tree was planted at the opening ceremony of the park on 15 October.
The tree reminds us of the importance of trees and forests
A Children’s Tree is planted annually in a new or renovated park or playground in Helsinki. It is hoped that the renovated playground in Katri Vala’s Park will attract more local children to play. To this end, planting a Children's Tree in Katri Vala’s Park felt like a natural choice. In the renovated park, the play area has been moved from the lower to the upper level of the park, where you will find, among other things, the tallest climbing frame in Finland with a towering height of eight metres.
Traditionally, the Children's Tree has been planted on Arbor Day on 27 September, but this year the planting was timed to coincide with the reopening of Katri Vala’s Park. Arbor Day is a day of observance on which people and communities are encouraged to plant trees and reminded of the importance of trees and forests.
Each Children’s Tree is marked with a plaque and recorded in the City’s tree register, where it is assigned a special identifier. The plaque will feature the Puut (Trees) poem by Olli Sinivaara, which describes, among other things, the different shades of green in pine trees.
