Time Magazine includes Helsinki in list of world’s greatest places

The publication selected Helsinki as one of the world’s greatest places in 2021.

The US periodical Time Magazine has named Helsinki as one of The World's 100 Greatest Places(Link leads to external service) for this year. The article, published on 20 July 2021, includes Finland's capital on its list of extraordinary destinations to explore.

The magazine praises Helsinki for "giving old spaces new meaning", citing the Helsinki Biennial art exhibition on the former military island of Vallisaari and the new Scandic Grand Central Hotel located in the city's beautiful Art Noveau landmark, the Helsinki Central Railway Station, as examples.

Time writes that Helsinki has been long recognized as an environmental leader, but "may soon be seen as a burgeoning art hot spot as well".

This is the third year the magazine has published its list of the world’s greatest places. It says it has created the list as "a tribute to the people and businesses at the forefront of those industries who, amid extraordinary circumstances, found ways to adapt, build and innovate".

Helsinki is joined on the list by its neighbouring cities of Gothenburg, Nuuk, Odense, Oslo, Tallinn and Reykjavik.
