The renovation of Maatullinpuisto Park involves replacing vegetation in the park, improving the paths and installing new play equipment in the playground and the sports park. The first phase of the project consisted of water and drainage works and the construction of the playground and the meadows, walkways and lighting surrounding Maatulli Comprehensive School. Playground Maatulli will be completed during August.
In the second phase, which is about to begin, the soil will be prepared for the construction of a stormwater retention basin. The work will begin with construction site and traffic arrangements, tree felling and test stabilisation. This will be followed by the soil stabilisation works, during which the soil will be limed to stabilise it in preparation for excavations. The excavation work for the stormwater retention basin will be carried out during the next phase of the project, in winter 2026–2027. The construction of new ditches and stormwater drains will help to manage the water load caused by potential heavy rainfall and improve the flow of stormwater into the Keravanjoki river.
In the next phases of the project, landscaping work, such as planting, the creation of meadows and lawns and the construction of mounds, will also be carried out in the area of the stormwater channels. In the final stages of the project, improvements will be made to the network of footpaths and the lighting, in addition to which measures will be taken to control invasive alien species. The renovation is due to be completed in 2030.
The project has been planned on nature’s terms
The Maatulli Park project is a LUMO pilot project, meaning one of the actions under the City of Helsinki Biodiversity Action Plan (LUMO). The planning of the project has been based on the networks of forests and meadows that run through the park from northwest to southeast.
The project has been planned with a particular focus on biodiversity, with a wide range of experts in different fields, from biologists to geotechnical engineers, having contributed to the planning process. The Maatullinpuisto Park area includes e.g. a valued meadow that is classified as an endangered tall-herb mesic meadow.
The works will affect cycling and walking
The work will begin on Monday 17 August in the park area next to the Moisiontie allotment area. The work sites will be fenced off to prevent unauthorised access. Pedestrian and cycling traffic will be diverted to alternative routes, which will be marked out in the terrain with traffic signs. The works will generate minimal noise pollution in the surrounding areas, with noise mainly caused by lorry traffic and excavator work. The works will be carried out on weekdays between 7.00 and 18.00.
