Real estate limited company Laakso Joint Hospital to begin drilling a deep geothermal energy well in July

Real estate limited company Laakso Joint Hospital will start drilling a geothermal energy well next to the Laakso hospital area in the Laakso riding arena in Helsinki in the summer of 2025. First a shallow water well will be drilled.

This will be followed by the drilling of the first deep geothermal energy well with a larger drilling rig in July. The target depth of the energy well is 3,500 metres.

Preparatory works began with driving piles for the temporary structures in the Laakso riding arena in April. A concrete slab will be cast on site in the end of June to support the heavy drilling equipment.

Real estate limited company Laakso Joint Hospital will implement the seismic monitoring of drilling work in accordance with the authorities' stipulations.

Geothermal energy is key to achieve the ambitious energy-efficiency targets set for the project

Deep geothermal energy wells are a part of the comprehensive energy system designed for the Laakso Hospital area. The City of Helsinki and HUS Helsinki University Hospital have set ambitious lifecycle targets for the new hospital area, which are reflected in the project’s approach to design and engineering.

Both the construction works and the finished buildings must be energy efficient, lifecycle sustainable, observant of natural values and resource-wise in all construction aspects.

The starting points for design and engineering is achieving energy efficiency that exceeds the regulatory level, which is required under the City of Helsinki’s Carbon-neutral Helsinki Action plan and the HUS’s climate roadmap, making efficient use of internal waste heat and renewable energy produced on site.
