The waterfront route is named after Birger "Zeke" Käcklund (1930–1991). Käcklund was Helsinki's first cycling path inspector and cycling was his way of life. He was a deputy and full member of the City Council in the 1980s. The name of the route had already been in unofficial use since the late 1990s until it was made official in 2022.
