Construction of the new daycare centre in Veräjämäki under way – features nature-themed yard and art

Daycare centre Perhonen will get much-needed additional space when the new building for the daycare centre is completed in Veräjämäki in summer 2026. To match the name of the centre, i.e. butterfly in English, the facade windows and plants in the yard will feature butterfly and flower motifs.

The construction of the new daycare centre Perhonen (Jokiniementie 34 B) started in March 2025. As the name would suggest, the daycare centre and its yard have a nature theme.

Some of the windows will have a butterfly and floral patterned artwork designed by artist Mari Rantanen printed on them. The yard will feature bug hotels, planter boxes and plants that attract butterflies. Stormwater is directed into a rain garden, which children can access along a rocky adventure path. The yard has been designed by landscape architect Sirja Heinonen from Maisema-arkkitehtitoimisto Kokoma Oy.

The building has been designed by Arkkitehdit Frondelius+Keppo+Salmenperä Oy. The centre is a two-storey wooden building with room for 150 children. The building is heated with geothermal heat, and the solar panels installed onto the roof will generate approximately 10 per cent of the property’s energy demand.

Completion in summer 2026

Daycare centre Perhonen will be erected on the site of the former Jokiniemenpuisto playground. Foundation work is currently being carried out on the plot, which is then followed by the actual construction. The objective is to have daycare centre Perhonen start its operation in the new building in autumn 2026. The daycare centre is currently housed in the temporary pavilion at Jahtivoudintie 3.

Work on the site will be mainly carried out on weekdays between 7.00 and 18.00. The work will cause some noise. The actual construction will primarily be carried out under the weather shelter.

The main contractor is Arkta Rakennuskultti Oy.

The total budget for the new construction project is approximately 8,150,000 euros according to the autumn 2023 price level.
