City of Helsinki following Ilmala arena situation closely

Media reports indicate that an agreement to purchase Helsinki’s largest sports and entertainment arena has been reached. The agreement would transfer ownership of the arena to a group of Finnish buyers, the real estate investment firm of Trevian.

Based on the information available to the public, a sales contract has been concluded between the relevant parties for the shuttered arena located in Helsinki’s Ilmala district. The next steps depend on how the approval from the authorities progresses.

“The City of Helsinki’s primary goal has been voluntary sale, as it would best ensure that the arena is taken back into use as swiftly as possible. The city is however not a party to the sales agreement, and is therefore unaware of the contract specifics,” said Helsinki’s City Manager Jukka-Pekka Ujula.

The Helsinki City Board has stated that it will waive the city’s own measures, such as applying for an expropriation permit, if another opportunity presents itself for use of the arena. At this stage, the city is proceeding in line with its own processes and assessing and monitoring the situation closely.
