According to the jury of the Roadwork Site of the Year competition, the Töölönlahti flood protection site is an excellent example of ambitious management and strong professional expertise, which manifest as high quality. The site received praise from the jury for the effective collaboration between the client and the contractor, who have strived to continuously improve their working practices together.
A number of measures have been implemented at the site to improve the flow of traffic and safety, such as a temporary container bridge, which is divided into two lanes and protects pedestrians from the construction site. In addition to this, the Töölönlahti flood protection site has been used to study the effects of noise on fish in the bay.
The site contractor is Rajukivi Oy and the client is the City of Helsinki. The construction is expected to be completed in autumn 2027.
Honourable mention for positive attitude to Junatie metro bridge
The jury also awarded an honourable mention to the construction site for the replacement of the Junatie metro bridge in Helsinki. The justifications for the honourable mention highlighted the positive attitude on site, the high standard of arrangements and their continuous improvement in a challenging environment where inconveniences to pedestrians cannot be entirely avoided.
Furthermore, the site has achieved a 100% score in the evaluation of temporary traffic arrangements on several occasions.
The site contractor is Kreate Oy and the client is Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd. Read more about the progress of the construction site here.(Link leads to external service)
The competition encourages construction sites to take account of the everyday lives of city residents
The Roadwork Site of the Year competition highlights construction sites that minimise the inconvenience that roadworks cause to city residents and develop solutions that make getting around safe and convenient. At the same time, it encourages the entire sector to take better account of the needs of city residents.
“The best construction sites do not focus solely on the building work itself, but also on how the surrounding city functions while the work is in progress. This year’s competition featured several examples of how good planning, foresight and the right attitude can significantly reduce the negative impacts of construction,” says Project Director Mikko Suikki from the City of Helsinki.
This was the sixth time that the Roadwork Site of the Year competition was held in Helsinki. In addition to Helsinki, the competition was also held in Espoo and Turku. The winners were selected by a jury made up of construction industry professionals, city representatives and experts from various organisations, with the process coordinated by Ramboll.
The winners of the competition were announced at the Maarakennuspäivät civil engineering fair at Finlandia Hall on 1 October.
