The building will be repaired so that the services of the family centre and Symppis can be concentrated in healthy and safe facilities that correspond to the requirements of the services. The project is urgent because the current facilities used by the services are in poor condition and cramped and do not meet the needs of the services. The current facilities of Symppis are only usable for a limited time.
The Turunlinnantie 12 building has not undergone any major repairs in the past, and being 40 years old, the building requires an almost complete refurbishment and alterations. The most visible change on the outside will be the repair of the facades and windows of the building, which will contribute to improving the appearance of Tallinnanaukio.
According to the target timetable, the actual construction work will begin in November–December 2025 and be completed in full in December 2026. Light indoor demolition that does not require a permit has already been started. The aim is for Itäkeskus Family Centre to move into new facilities in January 2027 and Itis Symppis to move in in summer 2026.
The entrance to Itäkeskus Family Centre will be on the Tallinnanaukio side, while the facilities of Symppis will have a separate entrance and facilities one floor below, on the Turunlinnantie side. The customer premises of the services will not be connected to each other.
The project plan is submitted to decision-makers for consideration
The project plan for Itäkeskus Family Centre and Its Symppis matter will be discussed on 15 May 2025 by the Buildings and Public Areas Sub-committee of the Urban Environment Committee. The matter will then be submitted to the City Board and City Council, which will decide on the approval of the project plan.
The Social Services, Health Care and Rescue Services Committee issued a statement on the project plan on 13 May 2025.
According to the project plan, the scope of the project is approximately 6,200 m² in gross area. The maximum price estimate for the repair project is approximately EUR 19,440,000 at the cost level of February 2025.
The City purchased the outstanding shares of the Turunlinnantie 12 property at the end of March. Ownership of the property is expected to be transferred to Helsingin toimitilat Oy at the end of 2025.
