Playground Jalopeura in Siltamäki is in need of renovation. The City will completely redesign the playground, turning it into the first themed play area in Northern Helsinki. Siltamäki is a prime example of 1970s suburban development, and Jalopeura is a playground typical of that era.
The playground activities at Jalopeura have already ended, and as part of the changes, it will be converted into a play area. The renovation will include the demolition of the playground building and the wading pool in the centre of the area. A new, versatile water play area will be built to replace the wading pool. A low wall [MN1] will be built in the entrance area, decorated with schoolchildren’s space-themed drawings. There will be information boards about space and our solar system near the main entrance.
Atmospheric lighting will be added to the playground
The lighting in the playground will be completely renewed. In addition to general lighting, subtle light effects will be designed for the benches, shelters and water play area. Furthermore, some of the play equipment, such as the swings and roundabout, will use kinetic energy to generate light. The playground will also feature spherical lights resembling planets.
The size and location of the play area will remain unchanged, as will the walkways and main entrances. Most of the play area’s existing vegetation will be preserved, and additional plants will be added to the area.
Take a look at the plan and give your feedback by 7 April
The draft plan for the Jalopeura play area is now complete and available for viewing at hel.fi/en/urban-environment-and-traffic/urban-planning-and-construction/participate-in-city-planning. You can give feedback on the draft until 7 April [MN2] at https://app.maptionnaire.com/q/jalopeura(Link leads to external service) (in Finnish). The City is asking residents for feedback on topics such as the planned play equipment, vegetation and lighting.
Helsinki aims to build 15 themed playgrounds by 2040, which amounts to an average of one per year. The location selection process takes into account factors such as an even distribution across major districts and accessibility by public transportation or on foot. As locations for the themed playgrounds, the City has selected sites that are due for construction or renovation in the near future.
