The renovation will involve replacing the square's plantings and paving and repairing depressions in the square and street surfaces. The lighting and furniture in the square will also be replaced.

Unauthorised parking in the square will be prevented by bollards, while market vendors will still be able to park for short periods for loading and unloading and deliveries.

New planting areas and trees for the square

The existing trees in the square will be preserved. In addition to these, three new trees will be planted in the square and three new planting areas will be created. The planting areas will feature a variety of flowering plants. Additional benches will be installed in connection with them.

Water post relocated to the middle of the square

The water post in the square will be replaced and relocated to the middle of the square, to the south side of Punavuorenkatu. The water post is maintained by Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority HSY, and anyone can use it to fill their bottle with fresh drinking water.

The renovation will also take into account the use of the square for events. The electrical and water connections and waste management systems renovated during the project will support both market trading and events.

Renovation to start in early December

The renovation work will begin in early December with fencing off the work area, protecting trees and making traffic arrangements. Vehicle access from Punavuorenkatu to Fredrikinkatu will be blocked during the renovation.

The work will cause some noise. Working hours are 7.00–18.00 on weekdays. The contractor is TerraWise Oy.
