Equality and innovations key issues in future education: Sustainable Cities Discussion Forum in Helsinki 26-27 October

The Sustainable Cities Discussion Forum event series, initiated by the City of Helsinki and the UN University UNU-WIDER, will stage its second event in collaboration with the education innovator HundrED’s annual Innovation Summit. This time the focus will be on Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education.

This second event in the series will take place over two days, as part of HundrED’s annual Innovation Summit. The first day, Wednesday 26 October, will feature a keynote address from world-renowned development economist Lant Pritchett. He and other leading education innovators and specialists from around the world will then shine a light on education gaps, case examples, and the concrete steps that need to be taken to move from talk to action in education development. Other Wednesday speakers include the Mayor of Helsinki Juhana Vartiainen, UNU-WIDER Director Kunal Sen, Dream a Dream(Link leads to external service) Associate Director Varsha Pillai and Helsinki’s Head of Education Development Services Marjo Kyllönen. The first day’s events will take place at the Hanaholmen Cultural Centre, on the picturesque island of Hanasaari near the capital.

The event will continue on Thursday 27 October as part of HundrED’s Innovation Showcase, this time at Helsinki City Hall. Among other things, the showcase will focus on how to shape education so it can help young people stay resilient and hopeful for the future. The day will feature interactive workshops, panel discussions and insightful presentations on thinking creatively about the future of education. Thursday’s keynote speaker will be author and journalist Anya Kamenetz, who will be discussing the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on children. Later in the day, Deputy Mayor for Education of the City of Helsinki Nasima Razmyar, Harvard EASEL-lab(Link leads to external service) Director Stephanie M. Jones, Apple Schools Canada’s Lauren Walker, and KiVa Antibullying Programme(Link leads to external service) Director Anna Murgo will participate in a panel discussion.

The event will be moderated by Denise Wall.

Join us in person at the Hanaholmen Cultural Centre (Hanasaarenranta 5, Espoo) on Wednesday and/or the Helsinki City Hall (Pohjoisesplanadi 11-13, Helsinki) on Thursday. 

In-person attendants are asked to register in advance, and remote participants are welcome to follow the livestream on the City of Helsinki’s online video service Helsinki-kanava.
