Wetland areas, trees and wildflowers to be added to Longinojanpuisto park in Malmi

Wetlands will be created in Longinojanpuisto park along Ala-Malminoja to improve water quality, and a meadow with stepping-stones will be established for meadow plants that are becoming less and less common. Trees will be planted along the banks of Longinoja to create a route for Siberian flying squirrels, and the existing trees will be preserved. In addition to this, the drainage will be improved in Playground Filpus.

The project will begin at the end of June or the beginning of July. The wetland area will be prepared during the summer, before the trout spawning season. The other areas will be built in autumn 2026. The project will be completed in December 2026.

During the works, there will be changes to pedestrian and cycling routes. Traffic will be diverted partly to different parts of Longinoja and, in some places, to residential streets.

The site is part of the GreenInCities project, which is developing approaches to climate change preparedness and adaptation that take into account both city residents and the natural environment. In Helsinki, Malmi serves as a testing ground for innovative green infrastructure and nature-based solutions.
