The City of Helsinki is currently drawing up plans for the renovation of Tilketori Square in Malmi and the nearby Puimuripuisto Park. The plan is to transform the stone-paved Tilketori Square into a green and pleasant space that offers better opportunities than at present for relaxation and socialising. The aim is to soften the appearance of the current square and harmonise its various uses.
Designed in 1990, Puimuripuisto Park has largely retained its original appearance. The park consists primarily of an open grassy area with a few trees and benches. The aim is to develop Puimuripuisto Park into a garden-like and pleasant place to spend time.
As part of the renovation, new structures, such as picnic tables, swings and pergolas, will be added to Puimuripuisto Park and Tilketori Square.
Summer pilots provided new data to inform planning
In summer 2026, the City of Helsinki carried out placemaking pilots at Tilketori Square that were aimed at testing temporary facilities for relaxation and activities. The pilots involved bringing structures such as additional seating and elements suitable for skateboarding, parkour and ball games to the market square. During the pilots, it became apparent that residents would like to see more colour, more greenery, shaded seating areas and more things to do in the market square, among other things. The insights from the pilots are being taken into account in the planning of the market square.
