A new multi-purpose building is being planned for Lauttasaari. According to initial estimates, the building would be completed in 2032. The building would also house Lauttasaari Library and Youth Centre. A daycare centre is also being planned for the building. In August and September, city residents can participate in the planning of the future of library and youth services in Lauttasaari by responding to a resident survey between 18 August and 10 September or by participating in the work at Lauttasaari Day on 30 August or at the library from 30 August to 1 September 2025.
Lauttasaari Library and the Finnish- and Swedish-language youth centres are currently located at Pajalahdentie 10 in Lauttasaari. They are in active use: In 2024, Lauttasaari Library had a total of 207,117 customers, who borrowed materials a total of 251,936 times. Both the Finnish-language activities at Youth Centre Apaja and the Swedish-language activites attracted around 17,643 youth in organized activities in 2024. Furthermore, 10 766 children and adults participated in activities organised by associations and other operators.
The aim of the planning phase now being launched is to engage in dialogue with city residents about what kinds of library and youth services they would like to see in Lauttasaari in the future. The aim of gathering this information is to support planning by understanding the needs of city residents, such as what they want from the services and facilities in terms of functionality and atmosphere, and what kinds of customer paths should be taken into account when designing the facilities. The overall aim of the project is to design functional, modern, accessible and attractive facilities for city residents.
“Facility projects give us, as City operators, the opportunity to develop our services and the customer experience, which is also our goal in this project. We are well aware that the wishes and needs of city residents regarding services change and evolve over time. No one can predict the future on their own, which is why it is important for city residents to make their views known at this stage,” says Juha Ahonen, Head of the Culture and Leisure Division.
A special feature of Lauttasaari Library is that, compared to other libraries, borrowing books directly from the shelves is much more common; rather than just making reservations, people come to the library to find something to read. The library has a wide selection of materials for both children and adults. The library also has a high self-service rate, with around 100 visitors a day. As with other regional libraries, the library is used by school and daycare groups and for various events. Customers are also increasingly seeking spaces in libraries for studying, quiet reading, concentration and working, which are in short supply in the current premises of Lauttasaari Library.
In the premises of Lauttasaari Youth Centre Apaja and Ungdomsgården Drumsö, young people can, in addition to hanging out, play floorball or football, skateboard on Apaja's own mini ramp, play music in the rehearsal space, take part in various art groups, attend clubs, participate in various events – or organise events themselves. Crafts and visual arts are special areas of focus at the unit. Furthermore, the Lauttasaari premises serve as a central location for Heroes activities, which are youth centre and hobby activities aimed at young people aged 15–29 with various disabilities.
