On the herptile trail with children

Finland's only nature trail about reptiles and amphibians in Uutela's Särkkäniemi is now more child-friendly than ever. The City of Helsinki has published the additional material ‘With Sissi on the Herp Trail’ for use by groups of children and families touring the herptile trail.

The material introduces children to herps in an age-appropriate way and through play. You can scan the lizardly tasks directly from the foot of each signpost using a QR code, or download the material from the herp trail website and familiarise yourself with it in advance.

As a new feature, the nature trail signposts have also been fitted with podiums from which even the youngest members of the family can see some great photos of the lizards, frogs and snakes in the area.

Visit the herp trail in late April and early May

You can see almost all of Finland's reptiles and amphibians along the 1.4-kilometre-long herp trail. All three species of frogs found in Finland spawn in the Särkkäniemi ponds and lizards and snakes seek out the spring sun along the trail.
