The new hall will be a complex of approximately 3,700 square metres, with an indoor skatepark of some 1,370 square metres at its heart. The skatepark will have open hours for anyone to use, as well as reserved times for clubs and associations for skateboarding, scootering and BMX biking.
The large size and height of the hall are strengths for its use as a skatepark. Ramps and jumps several metres high, as well as areas for increasing speed, which have been impossible to build in current indoor skateparks, can be built in the hall. The large open space is also perfect for organising events, shows and competitions
The operating season of the skatepark will be similar to the current operating season of the Kontula skatepark: the hall will be closed in spring as the weather warms up and people begin to use outdoor skateparks.
Recreation hall for relaxed hobbies
The recreation hall in connection with the skatepark takes up approximately 1,370 square metres, and the facilities are planned to enable dancing and different forms of street art and street culture, for example. The recreation hall is intended to provide facilities for many kinds of movement, creative activities and simply spending time together. A wide range of independent hobby and group activities can be organised at the adaptable facilities of the hall, depending on the needs of the visitors and the region.
Lounge areas will also provide an opportunity to spend time and meet other young people and people with the same hobby. Dressing rooms, small group spaces, and areas suitable for organising different kinds of events are also available.
The Malmi hall provides much-needed additional space for the large community of street sports enthusiasts. At the moment, the only indoor skatepark in Helsinki is located in Kontula, and it is particularly busy during the winter season. The new temporary hall will improve the opportunities for practising a wide range of sports and make it easier to participate in a variety of activities in Helsinki.
Helsinki residents also voted an OmaStadi project for the Malmi region, aiming to increase the number of safe professionals who work with young people in Ala-Malmi. The opportunities provided by the indoor skatepark and recreation hall will also be utilised in the implementation of this OmaStadi Project.
Malmi is a good location for the hall
The future skatepark and recreation hall is located in Malmi, with excellent transport connections. Many children and young people live there, who have wished for more accessible opportunities for hobbies and sports activities. The new skatepark and recreation hall aims to provide a safe, communal and inspiring place for leisure activities.
The website for the Malmi indoor skatepark and recreation hall will provide information on the opening hours, prices, facilities and all other necessary infromation. The website will be opened towards the end of the current year on the nuorten.hel.fi/en website.
The temporary skatepark and recreation hall is currently estimated to be operational until spring 2028. The location for a new permanent indoor skatepark is also being looked into.
