Mannerheimintie renovation to be completed three months ahead of schedule

Helsinki's biggest street renovation to date will be completed ahead of schedule in September. Originally, the completion was scheduled for the end of 2025. The tram service between Runeberginkatu and Reijolankatu will resume on Monday 8 September.

All of the underground and above-ground technology was replaced during the renovation that started in spring 2023. Old water pipes dating back to the 1870s were replaced with new ones during construction. At the same time, rainwater drainage pipes, power lines and other parts of municipal infrastructure were also replaced.

Project reaps results of good work scheduling solutions

Preparatory works on the side streets of Mannerheimintie accelerated the work in the second phase of the renovation between the opera building and Reijolankatu.

“We started construction of the water supply on the side streets one year ahead of schedule. This enabled us to build the large mains line on Mannerheimintie quickly during the second phase of construction, because the demolition lines for the pipes in the side streets were already in place," says Project Director Antti-Juhani Lehtinen from the City of Helsinki.

The mild winter also allowed many weather-dependent work phases to be started earlier in the spring. The contractor for the project was VM Suomalainen oy and the project was implemented employing management contracting.

Space made for all modes of transport

After the renovation, Mannerheimintie can accommodate all modes of transport. There are two motor vehicle lanes in both directions, as before the renovation. One of the lanes is reserved for buses.

Ruusankatu, Savilankatu  and  Sallinkatu  were converted to one-way streets for cars in the direction of Mannerheimintie. The changes allowed for the addition of parking spaces, trees and vine poles on the side streets.

Tram stops and track improved

The tracks and stops of the tram line were renewed to meet the requirements of the future West Helsinki light rail. At the same time, the accessibility of the stops was improved and the stops were fitted with green roofs.

One-way cycle paths increase safety

One-way cycle routes separated from pedestrian and car traffic were built on Mannerheimintie, which will make cycling smoother and improve safety for all modes of transport. One-way cycle paths provide a safe route to the city centre as part of the central cycle path network.

Final touches put on the project in September and new trees planted in October

The final touches will be put on Mannerheimintie in September, including the installation of pavement and the final street markings. The work will continue on the new street plaza at the end of Humalistonkatu.

Autumn is the ideal time for planting trees. New trees will be planted in October on Mannerheimintie and the side streets. The trees to be planted on Mannerheimintie and Toivonkatu will be lime trees, while the trees to be planted on Ruusankatu and Savilankatu will be columnar alders.
