The extensive renovation of the park began in 2023. Different sections of the park have been opened for use as they have been completed. Lighting, furniture and planting areas have been added throughout the park. Supplementary plantings have been planted on the Svante Olssonin puistokuja birch avenue and benches have been added alongside it.
“This project was a major undertaking, and I am delighted that we will be able to open the beautifully renewed park to the public ahead of schedule. We have the contractor to thank for speeding up the schedule; they put a great deal of effort into this project and were able to allocate plenty of staff to it,” says Project Director Sari Niinivirta-Mamonoff.
The contractor for the park refurbishment was VM Suomalainen Oy.
New play area to open
A fantastic new central playground is currently being completed in the park, featuring equipment and musical instruments for visitors of all ages. In addition to this, the area surrounding the elk statue, the central square and the dog park for small dogs are nearing completion.
The new exercise area and games arena have already been opened. The small outdoor area adjacent to them has been renovated and will remain in use until construction of the tennis courts begins next year.
Projects completed in earlier phases include the entrance area of the Botanic Garden, the Svante Olsson Playground and the cycle path near the park.
Work on the water basin to continue until summer 2027
Repair work on the water basin in Kaisaniemi Park has begun and will continue until the summer. The historic rows of trees and diverse vegetation around the water’s edge will be restored, and benches and lighting will be added. The footpaths in the park will remain unchanged despite the building works. The work involves drilling and pile driving, which will cause some noise in the surrounding area.
