The renovation of Heteniitynkenttä will see the revitalisation of this versatile sports and outdoor recreation area in Vuosaari. The biggest change to the area will be the construction of an artificial ice rink, which will make it possible to skate even during mild winters. In addition to this, a new maintenance building will be constructed, which will house completely renovated changing rooms for those using the sports facilities.
The project is due to be fully completed in autumn 2027. The football fields and tennis and basketball courts will be completed and ready for use as early as next summer. If the work is carried out on schedule, the artificial ice rink will be ready for use towards the end of next year. Further technical equipment, such as a transformer substation to supply power to the rink, will be installed for the ice rink early next year. The ice rink will be tested before it is put into use. Either way, you will be able to go ice skating during the 2027–2028 winter season, as a natural ice rink will be created on the field in anticipation of the artificial ice rink.
The renovation of Heteniitynkenttä began in autumn 2025, and to date, the project has involved e.g. the replacement of the equipment in the outdoor gym, improvements to the paths surrounding the athletics field and the renovation of the football field and tennis court. The project has also included measures such as earthworks for the maintenance building and the parking area.
Heteniitynkenttä is located in a groundwater area, and the project was temporarily suspended in autumn 2025 to allow for more detailed planning and implementation of measures to protect the area. As part of the project, the sewer and water mains running beneath the fields and courts were also relocated in collaboration with the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority last spring. This work caused a slight delay in the completion of the sports areas.
Vuoniitty Comprehensive School students asked to take part in community planting event
As part of the renovation, new trees have been planted in the Heteniitynkenttä area. Fifth graders from Vuoniitty Comprehensive School had the chance to take part in the project when a planting event was organised at the beginning of September, during which the students planted new tree saplings in woodland areas. During the community work party, each class was allocated its own designated planting area, and around 180 saplings were planted. The renovation will also include the planting of new trees near the maintenance building, the parking area, the access routes and the exercise areas.
