The renovations will improve the pleasantness and functionality of the libraries. Although some libraries are temporarily closed during the summer, their services remain available to customers through Helsinki's extensive network of 38 libraries.

“It is great that Helsinki is investing in its libraries and their long-term development. Libraries are important meeting places for Helsinki residents, and by renovating them, we are ensuring that they will continue to serve their users better in the future,” says Director of Regional Library Services Lotta Muurinen.

Libraries being renovated in different parts of Helsinki

The longest of the library renovations is that of Vallila Library. The library closed for renovation on 1 May, and the work is expected to be completed in mid-October. The renovation will improve the accessibility and pleasantness of the library by e.g. renovating the entrance, flooring and lighting. At the same time, the children's library will be given more space.

The other three library renovations are shorter in duration. Maunula Library will be closed from 22 June onwards for floor maintenance. The current plan is to reopen the library on Monday 6 July 2026.

Pohjois-Haaga Library will be closed from 22 June onwards. The renovation involves repairing the library's structures and ventilation. The current plan is to reopen the library during week 34 in August.

Jätkäsaari Library will be closed from 26 June onwards due to a floor renovation. The current plan is to reopen the library on 21 July 2026.

Library services during the renovations

Customers of libraries under renovation can choose to pick up their reservations at any other Helmet library. They can also freeze their reservations for the duration of the renovation, allowing them to retain their place in the reservation queue.

Reservations arriving at closed libraries will be redirected to the nearest library: From Vallila Library to Pasila Library, from Jätkäsaari Library to Rikhardinkatu Library, from Maunula Library to Paloheinä Library and from Pohjois-Haaga Library to Etelä-Haaga Library.
