Eurocities is a network of 200 European cities. Its aim is to advance the cooperation between cities and serve as their common voice in Brussels to influence the EU-level decision making from a city perspective. The executive committee guides the strategic direction of the network and represents member cities in key European discussions.
– It is great that we get to continue our work in the executive committee of the Eurocities network. Eurocities gives European cities a strong common voice. It is cooperation that allows us to make a greater difference in implementing the goals of the EU in consultation with cities. As the EU is preparing the new multiannual financial framework it is particularly important to make sure that the cities are recognised as strategic partners. The cities are ultimately the ones turning the goals of the EU into reality, says Mayor Daniel Sazonov.
In its application to the executive committee of the network, Helsinki emphasised topics such as the key role that cities play in promoting competitiveness, social sustainability and equality in Europe, the significance of cities in preparing for the complicated risks of modern times, and the importance of the accessibility of European cities.
Helsinki has been a member of the Eurocities network since 1995. The city was also a part of the executive committee during the period 2023–2026. Helsinki being re-elected to the executive committee speaks volumes about the city’s active role in the vast network of European cities.
