During their meeting, Estonian Foreign Minister Tsahkna and Helsinki Mayor Sazonov discussed a proposed tunnel connecting Helsinki and Tallinn, support for Ukraine and other areas of cooperation between Helsinki and Estonia.
“We are currently working very closely with Tallinn and Estonia. During this term, a key focus of our cooperation is moving the Helsinki–Tallinn Tunnel project forward. The tunnel is a strategic-level project requiring the involvement of both local and central government. It is therefore excellent that Foreign Minister Tsahkna has shown his strong support for advancing the tunnel project. The meeting further strengthened our cooperation on this initiative,” said Mayor Sazonov.
Helsinki has a long tradition of close cooperation with Tallinn
The cities of Helsinki and Tallinn have been working together closely since the early 1990s. During the current term, Helsinki Mayor Sazonov has met with the Mayor of Tallinn Peeter Raudsepp twice, once in Tallinn and once in Helsinki.
Helsinki and Tallinn have agreed on joint priorities for municipal cooperation, emphasising areas such as the cities’ joint economic policy, logistics, climate change mitigation and cooperation in the field of tourism. During the current term, a proposed undersea tunnel that would connect the cities of Helsinki and Tallinn has also been given greater prominence as a collaboration priority between the two cities.
At their previous meeting, the mayors of Helsinki and Tallinn decided to establish a new inter-city working group to continue detailed preparations for the Helsinki–Tallinn Tunnel project.
