The junction of Nordenskiöldinkatu and Auroranportti is being renovated as part of a project starting in early November. The work is divided into three phases, the first of which is expected to last until the end of 2026. The entire project will be completed in June 2027. The project involves making improvements to the junction layout and renovating the water supply system in the Auroranportti area. In addition, the street infrastructure will be renovated. The contractor is Louhintahiekka Oy.
Turning lane to the Laakso Hospital area being built in the first phase
In the first phase of the project, a new turning lane will be built for traffic coming from the east, enabling vehicles to enter the Laakso Hospital area’s underground car park and service areas via the new Auroranportti road tunnel. The lane will help to keep traffic flowing smoothly at the busy junction.
The works will cause some inconvenience to pedestrians and cyclists. The pedestrian and cycling path on the Aurora Hospital side of Nordenskiöldinkatu, between Auroranportti and Veturintie, will be closed until the end of the year. The pedestrian and cycling path to Aurora Hospital will be diverted to a diversionary route for the duration of the work. Vehicle traffic to Aurora Hospital will continue as normal during the first phase of the project. The works will mainly take place between 7.00 and 20.00 and will cause a noise nuisance.
The new lane will be opened at the start of the year. The new road tunnel to the Laakso hospital area, the underground areas and the northern part of the main building are due to open in May 2027.
The construction of the main access road at Auroranportti is an essential part of ensuring the smooth running of the Laakso Hospital area. Parking, drop-off, ambulance and service traffic will be channelled from Nordenskiöldinkatu via the new main access route at Auroranportti.
Roadworks to continue in the spring
In the second phase of the project, the kerbstones and paving on the central reservation of the traffic lanes on Nordenskiöldinkatu will be renovated in the section near Aurora Hospital. In the third phase, the pedestrian and cycling path and bus stop in front of Children’s Traffic Town will be resurfaced. In addition, a central reservation will be constructed for the Auroranportti driving lane. The second and third phases will cause some disruption to traffic. Some of the works will be carried out at night and at weekends in order to minimise the disruption to traffic as much as possible. The roadworks project will be fully completed in June 2027.
