The smartest and most sustainable tourist destination in the world

Helsinki is at the forefront of sustainable travel on a global scale. Business Helsinki supports both tourism and other businesses that are committed to the principles of sustainable tourism. In 2024, Helsinki was presented with the Global Destination Sustainability (GDS) Leadership award for being a sustainable tourist destination. In March 2025, the city was awarded the Green Destinations GSTC certification, which adheres to the most stringent GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council) criteria in the world.

We increase attractiveness through sustainable maritime urban culture

Helsinki would not be Helsinki without the Baltic Sea and the archipelago. That is why protecting the Baltic Sea is a matter of both the heart and mind for us. The maritime nature of Helsinki is utilised through events and experiences such as the Baltic Herring Market, the mobile nature trail on Harakka island and the Helsinki Biennale, which enrich the lives of the city’s residents and tourists alike.

We are involved in ensuring that the most interesting maritime services and destinations that Helsinki has to offer are able to develop. We strengthen business cooperation and support various service pilots and operational opportunities along the coastal route. It is important to us that coastal routes are opened and maintained, the land use plans for the archipelago and the coastal routes are worked on, and the transport connections between the islands are strengthened.
