Trees to be felled in the Östersundom area for safety reasons

The City of Helsinki will fell trees that are in poor condition or that are otherwise hazardous in the Karhusaari, Puroniitty, Salmenkallio, Talosaari and Östersundom areas.

The work will be carried out by recreational routes and plot boundaries where trees that are hazardous or may fall suddenly pose a danger to residents and passers-by. For safety reasons, small trees will also be thinned out at the junctions of routes and streets, in particular, where the view being blocked may result in dangerous situations.

Most of the trunks cut down will be left on the ground as decaying wood. Varying levels of decaying wood support biodiversity in urban nature.

Report trees growing in public areas that are extending to a private plot

If necessary, small trees will also be thinned out at plot boundaries. If a housing company or plot owner so wishes, the City can also remove trees that have spread onto a private plot from a City-owned public street or park and cause a disturbance.

Trees that require special attention can be reported to customer services (tel. +358 9 310 22111, Mon–Thu 8.30–16.00, Fri 12.00–15.00). You can mark the trees to be inspected with a fibre ribbon or string. The City will remove marked trees based on its own inspections, so not all marked trees will necessarily be felled.

Bird nesting season taken into account

The working area includes the areas of Karhusaari, Puroniitty and Talosaari. The work is not based on the nature maintenance plan; instead, the measures carried out seek to improve the safety of plots and recreational routes.

The City will start the work during winter 2026. The bird nesting season in April–July will be taken into consideration when planning the work. No work will be carried out in important bird areas during this time.

The work is purchased by the Urban Environment Division of the City of Helsinki. Helsinki City Construction Services (Stara) are responsible for the implementation.
