The City of Helsinki is adjusting the construction schedule for the Suvilahti area so that the Suvilahti DIY skate park can remain in use for longer than originally planned. The current Suvilahti skate park will remain in the area until a new temporary skate park has been completed near the Hanasaari power plant.
According to the current schedule, construction work on the new temporary skate park is set to begin next spring, and the park is due to open in July 2027. The implementation plan for the new temporary skate park will be finalised this autumn.
The City’s long-term plans also include a permanent skate park in the Hanasaari area.
The demolition of the Suvilahti DIY skate park was originally due to begin this autumn. The skate park, which was built through voluntary work, is to be demolished because the City is building new street areas in the location as part of the development of the Kalasatama district. The current skate park was originally intended to be a temporary facility in the area, but the lease for the site has been extended several times.
The City aims to begin construction work on the street areas surrounding the existing skate park in late autumn or next winter, so that the initial stages of the project will not affect the skate park.
The support association Suvilahden skeittiparkin ja lähialueen tukijat sekä ystävät ry has recently submitted a building protection proposal and non-endangerment demand to the Finnish Supervisory Agency, seeking to prevent the demolition of the current skate park. The City is awaiting the agency’s decision on the matter. The Administrative Court has previously dismissed an appeal against the detailed plan for the area.
