On Porkkalankatu, work will be carried out between Länsisatamankatu and Länsiväylä. The cycling lanes on the street will be converted into one-way lanes and turning waiting areas will be added at intersections. In addition to this, the street structures, municipal infrastructure and drainage will be improved. Plantings will be added to the central reservations of the street and a new row of trees will be added to the northern separating lane. In addition to this, trees in poor condition on the southern edge of the street will be replaced. The street will also get new LED lights.
On Selkämerenkatu, cycling traffic will be moved to a cycling lane next to the driving lane. In addition to this, the crossing areas and crosswalks of Selkämerenpolku, Ruoholahdenpuisto and Messitytönkatu will be raised. The changes will improve road safety on the street. A multi-species planting will be created on the separating lane at the western edge of the street on the south side of Messitytönkatu, with seating areas. Furthermore, three groups of bicycle racks will be placed along the street. Street lighting will also be replaced.
The roadworks will begin on the week starting on 21 July and are expected to last until the end of August 2026. The project also includes the renovation of the Selkämerensilta bridge, which is scheduled to start in early 2026. The bridge will be closed for the duration of the renovation.
The works will cause temporary traffic arrangements in the area
The works will cause temporary traffic arrangements on both streets.
During the renovation, only one of the two lanes on the northern part of Porkkalankatu will remain in use. The bus stop at the site will be moved about 100 metres to the west. Pedestrians and cyclists will be directed to temporary routes by roadside signs. On Selkämerenkatu, only one lane will be closed at a time to keep the street open.
The contractor for the renovation is TerraWise Oy.
