Two detailed plan amendment processes are about to start in Meri-Rastila to facilitate new homes for roughly 770 residents. An extensive overhaul of the area has been planned for a long time, but the projects have failed to launch as planned. For this reason, the City is now searching for solutions through which new construction could be carried out in smaller projects than before and in phases.
The current housing stock of Meri-Rastila consists predominantly of rental apartments, due to which the City is aiming to promote owner-occupied housing.
New apartment buildings and houses in the Meri-Rastilantie area
Four apartment buildings are being planned to be built along Meri-Rastilantie, at the edge of Iso Kallahti Park. Houses and apartment buildings are also being planned for the unbuilt plots near Prammikuja and Harbonkatu.
The Heka rental apartment buildings along Meri-Rastilantie are set to be demolished and replaced with apartment buildings for owner-occupied housing. The Heka buildings would be demolished in the 2040s at the earliest. The new houses could be built at the turn of the 2020s and 2030s, while the new apartment buildings could be built to replace the demolished buildings in the 2040s.
Suburban regeneration bringing new investments to the area
In the coming years, the services, parks, streets and other public spaces of Meri-Rastila will be developed as part of the City’s suburban regeneration programme.
The largest park in the area, Haruspuisto Park, will undergo a renovation. The theme of the park will be the Baltic Sea and underwater life, and when completed, the park will feature attractions such as a climbing wall, an outdoor sports facility and areas for street basketball and water games. A new skate park and dog park have already been built in the area. The renovation of Haruspuisto Park will be fully completed in autumn 2028.
The new Meri-Rastila multi-purpose building will open in autumn 2029. The school will be renovated and the youth centre will have new premises in the former chapel. The new extension will feature a daycare centre, a sports hall, a playground and a community house open to all. A new daycare centre has also been built on Harbonkatu.
The area around the Rastila metro station and the surrounding streets will be improved with new surface materials and furnishings, as well as plantings and lights. Meri-Rastilantie will feature one-way cycling routes.
