No large structures are planned for the nature reserve, as the natural flood meadows of the area limit the durability and maintenance of structures. Recreational use will be directed outside the area along the adjacent outdoor recreation trail. A bench will be placed along the trail for nature observation. Information boards will be placed along the edges of the nature reserve, and destination signs will be installed in the most important areas to explain the history and nature of the area.

The Mellunmäenluhta nature reserve features significant natural assets, and in addition to endangered habitats, the area includes flood meadows that are especially notable in Helsinki. The area is also located in the important Vartiokylä groundwater area and the Broändan-Varjakanpuisto spring-fed mire area. The Mellunmäenluhta nature reserve complements the network of nature reserves in Mustavuori.

The management and use plan focuses on preserving the conservation values mentioned in the City of Helsinki Nature Conservation Programme, namely the flood meadow area, which is invaluable for its flora and birdlife, by restoring the water balance of the flood meadows by blocking old feeder drains.

Comments on the Mellunmäenluhta management and use plan can be submitted by email to the City of Helsinki Register Office ( helsinki.kirjaamo@hel.fi(Link opens default mail program) ) from 28 February to 9 March 2026. Please include the record number HEL 2024-004171 in your comment.
