The area will be planned as a combination of workplaces and housing, with the vitality of the area being based on good accessibility, a well-functioning urban structure and a pleasant environment.
The planning concerns the Takkatie business area, the area between Vihdintie, Pitäjänmäentie and the railway line, and the area around Atomitie.
Aiming for a more vibrant workplace area
Pitäjänmäki is already one of the most important hubs of employment in Helsinki. There are more than 20,000 jobs and around 2,500 residents in the area.
The aim is to leverage the area’s strengths and create conditions for new business activities and growth. Some of the existing business blocks may be gradually converted for new uses.
The planning will be carried out in close cooperation with parties such as businesses and property owners in the area to ensure that the solutions support both businesses and the redevelopment of the area.
Strengthening housing, services and urban life
The aim of the preparation of the component master plan is to promote the gradual transformation of the area into a diverse, mixed-use urban environment.
The planning will add more housing to the area, which will also bring with it more services and life after the working day.
Another aim is to strengthen the range of cultural and sports services available for everyone in West Helsinki. The good accessibility of Pitäjänmäki will also create conditions for larger event venues. Among other things, sports and art education facilities are already being planned for the Valimo station area.
Commercial services will be placed in locations that are easily accessible by various modes of transport.
Bringing clarity to mobility and parking arrangements
The aim of the planning is to clarify the street network and parking arrangements and streamline key freight transport and service routes.
Pedestrian connections will be improved, particularly to railway stations and recreational areas. Increasing greenery in street spaces will boost comfort, while clear routes will support safe mobility. The development of a more pleasant environment was also highlighted in a survey of entrepreneurs in the area.
Strengthening networks of green and recreational areas
Key nature sites in Pitäjänmäki include Patterimäki, Strömberg Park and the Mätäjoki River, which flows through the area.
The ecological and recreational connection along the Mätäjoki River will be strengthened as part of the green finger of West Park.
Progress and schedule of the component master plan process
The component master plan will guide future detailed planning in the area and provide guidelines for the long-term development of Pitäjänmäki.
The Urban Environment Committee will discuss the objectives of the component master plan on 9 June. The planning work and related interaction will start in autumn 2026. The work is expected to take about three years.
