Availability of accessibility information on outdoor routes improved

Information on the accessibility of services benefits a wide range of users. Accessibility information on outdoor routes increases the accessibility of nature experiences by helping visitors to explore the features of the routes in advance. Accessibility information has now been collected on 25 guided nature trails.

Accessibility information helps you assess whether the route is suitable for your needs

The accessibility of outdoor routes can be limited by e.g. varying terrain and differences in altitude. Accessibility information is important, even if the route is not fully accessible. Prior knowledge can improve the accessibility of nature experiences, for example for people with mobility or sensory impairments, or people who push a pram when outdoors.

Accessibility information on outdoor routes can now be explored on the Service Map and on the ‘Outdoor activities, parks and nature destinations’ website. The data comes from the operating location register developed and maintained by the City of Helsinki, and it is now also possible to enter information on outdoor routes into the accessibility application.

Information on 25 nature trails and routes in Helsinki compiled in the accessibility app

Accessible outdoor trails include the Lammassaari boardwalk with a birdwatching platform and the nature trails in Pornaistenniemi and Kivinokka.

In the summer of 2025, 14 nature trails, 11 marked trails around Helsinki and eight birdwatching platforms and other observation structures along the trails in Vanhankaupunginlahti were mapped for the accessibility app. Previously, accessibility information was only available for a few outdoor routes in Helsinki.

It is easy to view all the mapped routes on the Service Map in Finnish, Swedish and English. There is no winter maintenance on the routes.
