Photo: Christofer Senn 30 ToimiNtAKERTOMUS 2012 Grants In 2012, the Cultural and Library Committee awarded almost 15.9 million euros in grants, in support of the arts and culture. Of this sum, 3.8 million euro was allocated to professional theatres covered by the Theatres and Orchestras Act and 12.1 million euro in support of other associations, and as one-off grants. An operating subsidy for cultural and arts associations was granted to music schools, professional theatres not covered by the Theatres and Orchestras Act, museums, art schools and institutes, as well as educational and arts associations. The Cultural and Library Committee awarded one-off production grants to professional arts groups, for local cultural projects implemented in different parts of the city, and gave Art Grants to professional artists. In addition, grants, primarily for three years, were awarded to cultural activity development projects. A total of 1,076 applications were processed during the year. The Helsinki Culture Award of 10,000 euros was granted to dance artist Susanna Leinonen. She has forged a significant international career and brought several of her own productions, and international visiting groups, to Helsinki. To celebrate Helsinki’s year as World Design Capital 2012, the Helsinki Design Award was granted to graphic artist Erik Bruun in recognition of the significance of his life’s work as an artist. Bruun’s designs include posters, books, logos, stamps and banknotes. In addition, he has had a remarkable influence on Finnish graphic design. The film festival Night Visions was selected as the Helsinki Cultural Act 2012. This award totalled 5,000 euros. In addition to the Helsinki Cultural Act award, the committee commended the Cleaning Day event and the Baana project. Arts Grants totalling 210,300 euros were awarded to representatives of literature, the visual arts and applied arts. A total of 327 artists applied for an Arts Grant and 64 received one.
