Cab A personal smart card adjusts the driver’s seat, mirrors, instrument panel and controls. The cab also has its own air-conditioning system. This is a far cry from the open platforms on Kummer trams.

The low floor makes it easy to board The low floor makes it easy to board the new trams, which have floor heat. Air-conditioning makes for a pleasant ride in the summer.

Trams’ popularity has revived and deepened in Helsinki at the turn of the millennium. The number of passengers has steadily risen and reached about 55 million in 1999. Trams are a more stylish mode of transport than ever before in their hundred-year history. Trams provide fast and smooth service even when other traffic is congested. Clean air is another advantage: Helsinki’s green trams do not leave exhaust fumes behind them. Helsinki City Transport is renewing its fleet at a rapid pace.
